Capitol Hill Consulting Group (CHCG) is excited to welcome Alex Ortiz to the firm as Senior Vice President. For nearly 15 years, Alex worked on Capitol Hill for members of Alaska’s Congressional Delegation and is well regarded for his bipartisan relationships and his common sense, Alaska-first, approach to policymaking.

The bulk of Alex’s tenure on the Hill was with Congressman Don Young, Dean of the House and Congressman for All Alaska, whose impact – on the state and in the House of Representatives – spanned nearly five decades. As Chief of Staff, Alex spearheaded the Congressman’s efforts to secure passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, from early conceptual talks with the White House to the Congressman whipping Republican votes vital for the measure to be signed into law. He also oversaw the reestablishment of Congressman Young’s program to maximize the beneficial impact to Alaska of Community Project Funding, a practice the Congressman was famous for. Ortiz previously served as Congressman Young’s Legislative Director, shepherding numerous pieces of legislation, from drafting to codification, during a time period when the Center for Effective Lawmaking consistently named Young among Capitol Hill’s most effective Members of Congress, and the Lugar Center ranked him among the most bipartisan Members. During his tenure in Congressman Young’s office, Alex had a particular policy focus on Alaska Native and American Indian affairs, natural resources, transportation and infrastructure, education, housing, and agriculture.

Following Congressman Young’s passing, Alex stayed on as Chief of Staff for Alaska’s at-large Congressional District, orchestrating the archiving of 49 years’ worth of the Congressman’s papers and memorabilia. In September of 2023, he took an extraordinary leap across party lines to continue as Chief of Staff for Representative Mary Peltola (D-AK), where he set up the Representative’s office and staffing mid-session. As an Alaskan and seasoned Hill staffer, Alex has proven invaluable to Representative Peltola over the past nine months, navigating her through policy debates on issues vital to the state’s people, economy, and future. During his time with Peltola, Alex worked with the Alaska Delegation and stakeholders to secure vital wins including federal disaster assistance in the aftermath of Typhoon Merbok and reapproval of the Willow Project.

Alex started his career with Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) and has previous government relations experience representing a diverse range of Alaskan and non-Alaskan clients.

Alex is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was raised in Ketchikan, Alaska where some of his family still resides.
